What is a state diagram and when should I use one?

A state diagram (or state machine diagram) models the lifecycle of a system by showing all possible states, the events that trigger transitions between states, and any guard conditions. Use them for UI component flows, order/payment lifecycle systems, network protocol modeling, and embedded system logic.
